How should a child's shoes fit correctly?

Many people underestimate how much shoes affect a child's physical development. Every step a child takes shapes their posture and gait. Improper, uncomfortable, or ill-fitting shoes can become a silent enemy, gradually causing deformities and discomfort.
We want your child to grow strong and free in their movements. So let's find out how to avoid common mistakes and ensure that the chosen shoes fit your child's foot shape and provide ideal support.

What should children's shoes be like?

Choosing children's shoes is not just a purchase — it's an act of care and an investment in the health of the musculoskeletal system for life. A child’s foot is a delicate, flexible structure made mostly of cartilage and fat tissue. It is actively developing, and even slight external pressure or improper support can lead to deformities.
Before figuring out how the shoes should fit, it’s important to understand what good children’s shoes should be in general. Ideal children’s shoes, especially orthopedic ones, must meet several key criteria:

  • Natural materials: leather, nubuck, or high-quality textiles. These ensure proper air circulation and prevent overheating and sweating.
  • Flexible but not too thin sole: it should easily bend at the ball of the foot (near the toes) but have enough thickness to absorb shock and protect from uneven surfaces.
  • Firm heel counter: needed to properly fix the heel bone and ankle joint, preventing the foot from rolling inward or outward.
  • Wide toe box: toes should have enough room to move freely.
  • Arch support: an anatomical insole or arch support is essential for maintaining the arch of the foot.

How should shoes fit a child’s foot?

The way orthopedic shoes fit the foot determines how beneficial they are. Shoes that fit poorly — even the most expensive and beautiful ones — can cause serious problems, from calluses and corns to toe deformities and poor gait.

Here are the main fitting rules:

  • Toes: there should be a small free space between the tip of the longest toe (usually the big or second toe) and the inside front of the shoe — this is the so-called "functional allowance."
  • Heel: it should fit snugly against the heel counter but without excess pressure. The child should not feel pain or discomfort when walking.
  • Instep and fastening: the shoe should be securely fixed with Velcro, laces, or straps at the instep. Improperly fitted shoes that slip off or squeeze too tightly disrupt blood flow and correct walking mechanics.
  • Shape: ideally, the shoe should follow the natural shape of the foot, meaning it has an anatomical or orthopedic toe box that reflects the natural toe position. Narrow, model-style shoes are a no-go for growing feet.

Why shouldn’t children wear tight shoes?

Wearing tight shoes is extremely harmful for developing feet. Constant pressure causes toes to bend, disrupts blood circulation, and can lead to ingrown nails. In addition, the constant squeezing affects nerve endings, and the child may feel pain — sometimes without being able to explain why.
So, the answer to “why is it harmful to wear tight shoes?” goes far beyond blisters. Tight shoes are inherently harmful, as they can cause flat feet by compressing the foot and preventing the arch muscles from working properly.

How to choose the right shoes for children?

Choosing children's shoes always requires attention to detail, and one of the most difficult aspects is choosing the right size. Even if you’ve decided on the model, material, and heel stiffness, the real test is trying them on. The right allowance is the difference between comfort and the risk of injury or foot deformity.

How much bigger should children’s shoes be?

This is one of the most common questions parents have. The answer is simple: shoes should be larger than the foot by exactly the size of the functional allowance.
It’s usually recommended to choose shoes with an allowance of 0.5 to 1.5 cm (depending on the shoe type and season: winter models can have a slightly larger allowance).

  • 0.5 cm (5 mm) – the minimum allowance that lets toes move freely while walking. This is suitable for summer or late-season wear.
  • 0.8–1.1 cm (8–11 mm) – the ideal allowance. It’s split into two parts: about 5 mm for toe movement during walking and 3–6 mm for foot growth during the season.
  • 1.2–1.5 cm (12–15 mm) – the allowance for winter shoes, considering thick socks.

Many parents wonder if it’s harmful to wear shoes one size too big. If the allowance is 1–1.5 cm, it’s perfectly fine. What’s dangerous is wearing shoes that are too large (2 cm or more), as the child may start dragging their feet, tripping, and the foot won’t be properly fixed. This can cause improper gait, and the arch support will be positioned incorrectly relative to the anatomy of the foot.
