It is probably almost impossible nowadays to find an adult who has never faced the problem of “how to fall asleep when you can’t sleep.” The modern world is developing at a tremendous pace and becoming increasingly interactive. This brings undeniable advantages but also disadvantages, especially for our nervous system.

What is insomnia?

Let’s first make sure we understand the term in the same way.
Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep or frequent awakenings, resulting in unrefreshing sleep. If this happens occasionally, it’s considered normal. However, if insomnia becomes systematic, it significantly reduces quality of life, affects productivity, and in the long term — health and appearance.
Insomnia is considered a medical condition if episodes occur three or more times a week, have a significant impact on well-being, and last for more than a month.
Does this sound familiar? If yes, you have my sympathy. The good news is that there are many life hacks to help you solve the problem “How to deal with insomnia.”

Causes of insomnia

Of course, we should take into account the special conditions we currently live in here in Ukraine. There are causes of sleep disturbances we simply cannot influence.
The most common and widespread causes include:

  • noise or excess light in the room;
  • lack of fresh air, uncomfortable temperature or humidity level;
  • stress, nervous tension, overexcitement;
  • strong emotions (both negative and positive);
  • hunger or overeating;
  • physical discomfort or body pain;
  • mental disorders;
  • diseases and injuries;
  • consumption of caffeine-containing products or certain medications.
By the way, even an ordinary pillow can be a source of discomfort during sleep. If it doesn’t properly support your neck or head, it affects sleep quality and may provoke insomnia. Learn more in the article “Do you sleep on a regular pillow? It may harm your health.”
